Molly Nilsson: Single

MOLLY SINGLE

Molly Nilsson: Single. Released May 12 on Dark Skies Association/Night School. Limited to 800 on Black Vinyl, 7" with insert and DL Code. Art by Molly Nilsson.

Order from the Night School Shop

Peek-a-boo! An artist in her songwriting prime, hyperactive with the possibilities of the world despite the global zeitgeist forever shifting, Molly Nilsson sent us 2 new songs around the same time as the tracks for her new album Imaginations that were incredible pop tunes on their own right, yet just too long to fit on Imaginations. Like much else in Molly’s career, we decided to break the mould, not follow album-release protocol, and surprise you all with this double AA a mere fortnight before Imaginations hits the shelves.

About Somebody seems to be about somebody, or maybe even somebody’s body, about desire too, perhaps. How else to interpret the line “Babe I want to party with you every night, and have a hard-on for the rest of my life?” But this is a Molly Nilsson song, and this is Empowering Content. Over a rousing, even anthemic, verse/chorus one-two, a soaring synth-string hook that rides the handclaps beautifully, we‘re soon left wondering whether our beloved narrator is really focusing on the “other” at all. Love lets you down: treat it mean, keep it keen, and remember if you can’t love yourself how the hell are you gonna love some one else?

On the flip, Quit (In Time), is a classic minor-key Nilsson elegy to obsession and addiction, sounding almost close to an early 80s Springsteen love-story. Here we imagine Nilsson at the piano, her heart a resounding bell for all longing. If About Somebody is the tumultuous onset of an affair, here we’re hopelessly drawn to the flame, unable to leave alone that which causes the sweetest pain. It’s a universal theme, the longing for something we shouldn’t have, and Nilsson seems to elucidate the feeling with a precise, razor-sharp lyrical nous that fans will instantly recognise.

Single is about the self and the other; about navigating the love of others that tries to trip us up. But it’s also about you. Single is because you’re worth it.

Molly Nilsson: Imaginations

Molly Nilsson is now our well-established soulmate, sister and fairy godmother. In 2015, Molly Nilsson’s Zenith broke new ground for her, fast becoming her biggest selling album to date, winning her new acolytes. For us, Molly Nilsson is beyond other songwriters and singers. A lyricist so nuanced and honed that each epithet speaks directly to the heart, removed from the humdrum of everyday life and industry.

For an artist who has so successfully created her own environment and gradually let others in, her 8th studio album Imaginations sees Nilsson directly engaging with her surroundings, engendering change and allowing love in. Imaginations dreams big, recasting storming, stadium-sized pop into the internal language of the solo auteur. Imaginations is not escapism, it’s a kaleidoscope and an alternative view, an agent of change.

On Imaginations Molly is recasting her interior monologue as a prism through which to see the world, a means to live differently and to reject the status quo. We can Think Pink, change our destiny together. This is an optimism about the future when we need it the most. “New boys, new girls.. give me your smile and I’ll give you mine” Clearly, we are living through a transformation but with alchemists like Molly Nilsson, we’re never alone in the process.

Patience: The Church

We’ve been waiting a long time to announce this. One of our favourite contemporary songwriters and age-old friend Roxanne Clifford steps out from behind her guitar and into the disco to pen one of her best songs, The Church. Clifford’s songs and voice drove her band Veronica Falls through 2 classic bittersweet guitar pop records and we’re overjoyed to be working with her as Patience.

The Church is a heart-meltingly bittersweet slice of genius pop. Clifford is one of the most naturally gifted songwriters we’ve ever worked with and so we’re extremely proud to introduce Patience.

The Church / My Own Invention is released on May 6th, limited to 300 7"s with screen-printed sleeve by Roxanne. The 7" is sold out from the Night School Shop but you can pick one up by clicking: MONORAIL or ROUGH TRADE or wait for BIG LOVE, NORMAN and PICADDILLY, who will all get some copies.

Molly Nilsson: Zenith

We first met Molly Nilsson many moons ago when she was a travelling singer gigging in London, selling her then-new album Follow The Light. Since then it’s been difficult to express exactly how much her songs have come to mean to us. We’ve been honoured to work with her and her own label Dark Skies Association in releasing many other releases but we feel her new album Zenith presents a sea change and contains her best songs to date. The new video for 1995 is below, it’s our song of the year.

You can also preorder Zenith on Ltd White Vinyl/CD at the Night School Shop.

Release date is November 6th as we have experienced a production delay. You can pick up digital copies of Zenith on iTunes but we believe the CD and vinyl are going to be truly special. In the meantime, 1995 is the pop song of the year:

Rose McDowall’s Cut With The Cake Knife

We are truly excited to present the next stage in our ongoing reissue project with cult singer Rose McDowall. Upon leaving Strawberry Switchblade, Rose embarked on an exciting if tumultuous adventure, recording with friends in Coil, Current 93, Psychic TV and Felt, while enlisting members of The Sugarcubes and Into A Circle for her own debut solo recordings. The Sunflower Demos, later re-named Cut With The Cake Knife, document her head-space at the time, as well as point to what the future was to bring. As such they are the most direct pop songs she ever wrote, still smitten with the bright/melancholic dichotomy she had so perfected with her partner Jill Bryson in Strawberry Switchblade.

Check out this montage of rare stills from the period, all featured on the new edition of Cut With The Cake Knife.

You can now pre-order Rose McDowall’s Cut With The Cake Knife from us on CD and vinyl here.

The pressing is: 500 x Black Vinyl, 500 x Clear/Black Vinyl and limited CD. We are out of the Clear/Black vinyl allocation but you can pre-order from your favourite record store. We recommend MONORAIL MUSIC / ROUGH TRADE / NORMAN Our partners Sacred Bones are pressing the album in America and we recommend picking the LP up from them if you are a U.S. resident. Both versions feature remastering by Brian Pyle (Ensemble Economique), new unearthed photos from the period and extensive new liner notes from Rose.

Sally Dige has announced her long-awaited debut album, Hard To Please. A seductive, pop masterpiece, the long-player consolidates the last 3 years of activity into a cohesive statement. An elusive artist self-portrayed as both a powerful body-mover and vulnerable balladeer, we’ve been obsessed with Hard To Please for months and are extremely excited to present it.

Welcome: Paper Dollhouse

We’ve been in touch with Paper Dollhouse for a while now, ever since some records were exchanged, and were flattened by the stark, enveloping beauty of their second LP Aeonflower. We were flattered that the duo wanted to release it through Night School, so it’s with a lot of excitement we present Helios from Aeonflower.

Aeonflower will be released on March 2nd. The vinyl will be limited to 500 and you can pre-order it here

Our friends over at Bird Records are making a limited cassette edition and will be selling digital formats.

Some of our favourite artists have been permeating Europe’s dark corners of late. Belgian blog Peek-A-Boo and their photographer Marquis Xavier captured a stellar performance by Sally Dige supporting Soft Metals. Go HERE for the full set.

Sally Dige also teamed up with Terror Bird in the misty past to produce a video for Waiting For Nothing, featured on Terror Bird’s 2012 album Secret Rituals. It’s recently come to light and showcases Nikki Nevver’s pop nous.

Finally, there’s a wonderful mix over at Fracture Air featuring Molly Nilsson alongside the likes of K.Leimer, Congos and Augustus Pablo.
